Sonagachi is one of the popular red-light areas in the North Kolkata. More than 11000 sex workers are working in this area. There are numbers of authorized and un-authorized brothels in this area.
Sonagachi Project is to promote use of condoms between the female sex workers. Sonagachi Project is managed by DMSC (Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee).
The aim of the project is
- Sex workers’ rights advocacy,
- Anti-human trafficking and
- HIV/AIDS prevention
There are around 51 free clinics where sex workers can go for free check-ups and counselling.
